Copied from the Congressional Directory: South Trimble, Democrat of Frankfort, was born in Wolfe County, Kentucky, April 13, 1864: He was educated in the public school and Excelsior Institute, located near that city; is a farmer by occupation; was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1898 and again in 1900 being elected Speaker in the last year; served in that capacity during the memorable Gobbel contest; was married November 24, 1885 to Miss Carrie Bell Allan of Galveston, Texas; was elected to the Fifty-seventh Congress receiving 30,325 votes to the 16,810 for R.P. Stall Republican. He represented the seventh district-counties, Bourban, Fayette, Franklin , Henry, Oldham , Scott and Woodford, also Owen-(8 counties).

The desk which he used on the floor of the United States House of representatives is presently in the home of South Trimble Lynn's, Southland Farm, Montgomery County , Maryland .

South Trimble owned a large farm in Alabama , "Walnutta." "Walnutta" had 1800 acres. In the late 30s South sold the farm. When we were very young, we use to spend summers in Alabama . I have a photo of myself at five in Hester's cotton field surrounded by farm hands and I have hands full of cotton balls. Brother David and sister Margaret are also in the picture.

Miss Margaret Allan Trimble, second daughter of South and Carrie Bell Trimble, of St. Nicholas Apartment, was married to David Lynn of Cumberland , Maryland , at noon yesterday at S1. Margaret's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Herbert Scott


Smith, rector officiated. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Fannie Mae Trimble, as maid of honor, and the bride-groom's best man was his nephew Mr. David Lynn. The brides costume was of dark blue flat crepe, embroidered in henna and gold, with a hat of black lace trimmed with a Brilliant ornament. She wore a corsage bouquet of orchids and lilies of the valley. The maid of honor wore a pleated navy blue dress embroidered in jade green and gold and a hat of green horse-hair with a large water Lilly ornament. She carried a bouquet of pink roses. The church was beautifully decorated with Marguerites, pink snap dragons and palms. The wedding marches and selections from Faust, were played by Mr. McLead, the organist of the church. Mr. D. Wyatt Aiken, Jr. of Greenville, South Carolina, Mr. Ben Foster, Mr. A. Schlobolim and Mr. South Trimble, Jr., brother of the bride, were ushers. Miss. Trimble was educated in the Belcourt Seminary. She was a popular member of the Congressional set. Her father, for many years, was a member of Congress from the seventh district of Kentucky and later was Clerk of the House of Representatives. Mr. Lynn was Civil Engineer of the Capitol for several years, and recently, upon the death of Mr. Elliot Woods, he was appointed to the position of Superintendent and Architect of the Capitol. He is a member of the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater Commission, Public Buildings Commission and the Commission on enlarging the Capitol grounds. After a wedding trip in the North, Mr. and Mrs. David Lynn will be at home June Ist-2155 California Street . They were married May 7th 1924 .

Seventh  Architect of the United States Capitol. Took job at the Capitol in the late 1800s as a bicycle policeman was transferred to the Architect of the Capitol's office and over the years worked himself up to the highest position -7th Architect of the United States Capitol. He served on Capitol Hill for over fifty years.

David Lynn, son of David and Mary Jane Acheson Lynn was born in Wheeling West Virginia , while the children were quite young their parents moved to Cumberland , Maryland to live in the ancestral home "Rose Hill" built by his great grandfather Captain David Lynn in 1801. His great Grandmother Mary Galloway Lynn, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Birkhead Galloway was born in Anne Arundel County , West River , Maryland . Both her husband and father were in the Revolution.

All round the Capitol sound praises of Lynn , Architect of America's greatest building, is a native of Cumberland . The magazine section of the Washington Sunday Star, February 15, in a page article by Will P. Kennedy captioned "skill of experts displayed by officiates of Capitol Buildings" carries amongst others a picture of David Lynn, Architect of the Capitol who is a native of Cumberland . Mr. Lynn is seated at his desk. The opening paragraphs of Mr. Kennedy's article read; The United States Capitol Building is the very heart of the nation. It is the work shop of the Congress, which has sole authority to make the laws and of the Supreme Court set up by the Constitution to interpret the laws. Yet few persons throughout the country, even members of Congress, appreciate what a sizeable plant the Capitol and its accessory group of buildings really is. Fewer still ever stop to consider that group of earnest and efficient experts, who keep the work shop in shape for Congress, and the Supreme Court, while Congress is besieged by job hunters and seekers after political patronage - each one of the 435 members of the House and the 96 members of the Senate having its own trouble in the regard - it is worthy of note that come Republicans and go Democrats or vice versa. Austin Cooper Waller, Vice President and Director of the International Bank of Washington DC., and director of the Merchant Bank and Trust Company, also of this city, is a brother of John Robert Waller, and co inheritor of the Waller ancestral legacy of enterprise and ability. He was born in Iwoa, October 30, 1885 , and was educated at the Dubuque High School , from which he was graduated in 1902. Then followed a year at Culver Military Academy , and three years at the University of Chicago before entrance upon the career of banking and manufacturing in which he has been engaged since 1906.

15 or so years with Universal Floors, and a big need for raw hardwood floors, it was decided that David would establish a wholesale business from which Universal would purchase their flooring supplies. David established Cherokee Wholesalers and started into supplying Universal Floors its needs, cutting out the wholesale suppliers that had not been very efficient, to say the least. Cherokee has grown into a very large wholesale company and is now supplying all flooring companies in the Tri-state area.

David served in the U.S. Navy as Seaman First-Class during WWII 1944-1946.

His basic training was at Bainbridge , Maryland and he served on the Destroyer, DD748, Harry E. Hubbard. His ship was the flag ship of the destroyer group that served as "picket" ships to ward off the Japanese Kamikaze planes at Okinawa . Brother South landed on Saipan Island attached to Aviation Supply Annex, the Northern Marianas , Western Pacific the same day that the Hubbert went into "picket" duty at Okinawa .

David returned to civilian life and spent time at the University of Maryland . He decided to leave the University and start a career at United Clay Products Co. a very large supplier of construction products in the Washington , D.C. area.

South founded Universal Floors, along with David Lynn, Jr and Allan Dawson Johnson, but was the first employee as David continued to work at United Clay Products and Al had other pursuits. David later resigned from United Clay Products and went to work at Universal Floors. Al Johnson joined South with Universal prior to David's arrival, but was later bought out by the brothers. As of this date, 2005, the company is under the same management 52 years from its founding in February 1953. The company specializes in the installation of wood flooring and finishing and refinishing of same. Two of South's sons, South, Jr and Sprigg are prominent figures in the continuance of a thriving business.

South served in the United States Navy as Seaman First-Class during 1944-1946, WWII era. Went through basic training at Camp Peary near Williamsburg , Virginia and served in the Western Pacific on Saipan Island , Northern Marianas , Aviation Supply Annex. Aviation Supply Annex was the largest seaplane tender base west of Pearl Harbor , Hawaii . South was sworn into the navy the day he turned seventeen, July 28, 1944 .

Following the War, South graduated from the University of Maryland , January 15, 1952 with a B.S. degree in Business and Public Administration.

Attended Maryland after finishing an incomplete high school tour at Central Veterans High School in D.C. Went through college on the "G.!. Bill of Rights." Upon graduation he was helped in finding a job by brother David who was working at United Clay Products and had numerous contacts in the construction supply business. He worked for less than a year with a flooring concern, Suburban Floors in Hyattsville, Md., when he and David started Universal Floors in D.C. Their first thought had been home building, but following South's experience with a flooring company they thought they would try establishing their own flooring company and did. 50 years later it is still going strong.

South spent, off and on, more than ten years working on Capitol Hill, 1942-1952. During that time he finished high school, U.S. Navy and college.
