Oct. 1, 1881, John Galloway Lynn.  Mr. Lynn was born and always lived in Cumberland.  He build the Potomac Coal Wharf, and was superintendent of the wharf from 1840 to the time of his death.  He left a widow, three sons, four daughters, and fifteen grandchildren.  He was once elected to the House of Delegates as a Whig, voted for Douglas, and was a Democrat afterwards.  He was nominated for sheriff in 1879 on the Citizens' ticket, and ran largely ahead of the ticket.  He was a communicant and vestryman in Emmanuel (Protestant Episcopal) Church for many years.

The Late Mrs. John G. Lynn: Mrs. Rebecca Lynn, wife of the late John Galloway Lynn, Sr., formerly of this city, died at her residence in Baltimore last evening of pneumonia and heart trouble, at the age of 77 years.  Mrs. Lynn was formerly a resident of this place, living in the Lynn mansion on Rose Hill but moved to Baltimore about seven years ago, where she resided with her three daughters, Misses Mary, Anne and Nellie W. Lynn.

John G. Lynn, Sr., late husband of the deceased, was the manager of Lynn's Wharf on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal for a number of years until the canal stopped running boats there.  He was also at one time interested in one of the coal companies in this place.

Mrs. Lynn was a member of good and regular standing in the Episcopal Church; her hospitality was celebrated far and wide especially among the poor.  She will be long remembered by many for her kindness and will be greatly missed by all with whom she was acquainted.

Besides her three daughters mentioned above, with whom she lived, her children were John G. Lynn, Jr. of this city; David Lynn of Calvert County, MD, S. Sprigg Lynn of Olio, Louisiana, and Mrs. Eugene Webster of Annapolis, MD.  She was an aunt to Mrs. Rebecca Henderson, Mrs. Mary Jones and also to Misses Fannie Tilghman and Frisbee Lynn, all of this city.

Her remains will be brought here on Monday afternoon and taken to Emmanuel Church.  After the services, the internment will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery.

     In the 1850 Federal Census, John G. Lynn's occupation is listed as Brickmaker.  He is 47 yrs. old and members of the household are listed as: Rebecca Lynn - 35, David Lynn - 14, Fanny Lynn - 17, John Lynn -7, Mary Lynn-0, Sprigg Lynn - 6 and a Mary Logston.

     In the 1860 Federal Census, John G. Lynn's occupation is listed as Agent of Coal Co.  He is 56 yrs. old and members of the household are listed as: Rebecca Lynn-45, David Lynn-21, John Lynn-18, Sprigg Lynn-15 Occupation: Clerk for father, Mary Lynn-11, Annie Lynn-9, Ellen Lynn-2, William Eugene Webster-28, Fanny Webster-26 and Rose Lee-10

     In the 1870 Federal Census, John G. Lynn's occupation is listed as Wharf Agent.  He is 67 yrs. old and members of the household are listed as: Rebecca Lynn-55, Fanny Lynn-36, Sprigg Lynn-26, Matilda Lynn-20, Mary Lynn-20, Anna Lynn-16, Ellen Lynn-9, Rosalia Webster-9 (granddaughter), Rebecca Webster-7 (granddaughter) and Mary Black-45, Simpson-20, Biddy Mallon-45.

     In 1870 his son, John G. Lynn II was living with his wife, Clara Minor Lynn and their son, John G. Lynn III-3 yrs old in Wheeling, W. VA. John's occupation is listed as "Stove Business"  John G. II oldest son, David Lynn III was also living in Wheeling at his mother-in-law's, Lavinia Acheson. David's occupation is listed as "Iron Mfg."

     In the 1880 Federal Census, John G. Lynn's occupation is listed as Agent for Potomac Wharf. He is 76 yrs. old and members of the household are listed as: Rebecca B. Lynn-63, John Lynn, Wharf Master 38 yrs.old, Mary Lynn-31, Nannie Lynn-25, (is Anne) Nellie Lynn-22, (must be Ellen) John G. Lynn-10 (grandson) Eliza Brooks-servant, Cora Ridgely-Servant.
